President Donald Trump commended Ric Grenell, his presidential envoy for special missions, after six Americans held in Venezuela were freed, Breitbart reported.
“Just been informed that we are bringing six hostages home from Venezuela,” Trump wrote in a post on X. “Thank you to Ric Grenell and my entire staff. Great job!”
Grenell also shared the news on X, posting a photo of himself with the freed hostages and stating that they had spoken to Trump.
“We are wheels up and headed home with these 6 American citizens,” Grenell wrote. “They just spoke to @realDonaldTrump, and they couldn’t stop thanking him.”
The release followed Grenell’s meeting with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, with the envoy’s objective being to “secure the release of Americans detained” in Venezuela, according to Reuters.
Officials in the Venezuelan government have accused detained Americans of “terrorism” and have described some as “mercenaries,” Reuters reported.
While the identities of the freed individuals were not disclosed, the Associated Press reported that as many as 10 Americans remain in detention in Venezuela.
