Democrats are questioning the legality of the decision by the White House budget office to pause all grants and loans distributed by the federal government to ensure that its programs are in line with President Donald Trump’s executive orders, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
“Donald Trump must direct his administration to reverse course immediately and the taxpayers’ money should be distributed to the people,” Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said in a statement.
Office of Management and Budget acting director Matthew Vaeth said agencies must stop “all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all federal financial assistance” to the “extent admissible by applicable law,” while ordering a review of programs to determine “best uses of the funding” consistent with Trump’s priorities, according to The Hill.
