The Department of Homeland Security extended Temporary Protected Status for El Salvadoran nationals through September 2026, allowing the program’s beneficiaries to start re-registering for the 18-month period, the Hill reported.
The move could complicate the incoming Trump administration’s plans to scrap long-term immigrant protections, the Hill said.
Under TPS, nationals of designated countries are allowed to live and work in the United States, according to the Hill. TPS has been criticized by groups looking to curb immigration because many designations are extended for decades, the Hill said.
